HEALTH MATTERS.

The Animal Health Trust (UK) is seeking DNA samples from bilaterally or unilaterally deaf dogs of any breed. NDBTC has placed AHT DNA swabs with the following clinics where baer testing is available.
North Richmond Vet.Hospital (nsw) 02 45712042
Murdoch Uni  Vet. Hospital (wa)  08 93606482
Ballarat Veterinary Practice(vic) 0353392266
Noah's Crosiing Vet.Hospital(08 85242260
Vineyard Vet Hospital 0296271257
This list will be updated as DNA kits are available at other clinics.

DNA is collected by a simple cheek sweep. A copy of the baer test, 3 to 5 generation pedigree and sample from unaffected sibling or close relative is preferable, however not mandatory so samples from all deaf animals are eligible.
I will have DNA kits available periannath@activ8.net.au or contact  Bryan McLaughlin  bryan.mclaughlin@aht.org.uk

Dr. Olivier at Michigan State University Vet School is compiling a database of echo doppler test results to analyse for breed norms once there is a statistically significant sample size.Doppler results from Aussie BT's will be much appreciated.Your dog need not be identified by name. For contact details of Dr. Oliver please email Dale Schurr  drschuur@chartermi.net

Dr. Caroline O'leary requests DNA samples from BTM's for ongoing research into PLL. A grant has been made available for minis over 3yrs old to have their eyes checked by an ACES approved specialist and DNA (blood) taken and tested for PLL free of charge.Testing is confidential and results released only to the person who signs the DNA test form but this is research &samples need to be collected and processed in batches so definite time frames for results cannot be given. Please note you must contact Caroline prior to testing.Even if your dog has been tested as carrier(over 3yrs) or affected please consider submitting blood and ACES certificate. It won't cost you anything but your time and it is the only way we discover why some carriers will luxate.
